Portrait of a Musician - Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan
Attribution — The Enduring Debate
This is one of the more contested Leonardo attributions. Historical attributions have fluctuated between Leonardo, Bernardino Luini, Ambrogio de Predis, and Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio. A 1904–1905 restoration by Luigi Cavenaghi dramatically changed understanding when removal of overpainting revealed a hand holding sheet music — transforming it from "Portrait of a Duke" to "Portrait of a Musician."
Evidence for Leonardo's hand: The face shows sfumato modeling, anatomical precision, and intensity of gaze characteristic of Leonardo. The walnut panel matches his preferred support. IR reflectography reveals underdrawings consistent with his preparatory techniques. X-ray testing showed similarities with the Lady with an Ermine.
Identity Of The Sitter
Leading candidates include Franchino Gaffurius (Chapel Master of Milan's Duomo — but likely too old for the young man depicted), Atalante Migliorotti (Leonardo's musician friend, currently the frontrunner), and Josquin des Prez. The inscription "CANT...ANG..." has been read as "Cantum Angelicum."
