"Shadow is the obstruction of light… Shadows appear to me to be of supreme importance in perspective, because without them opaque and solid bodies will be ill-defined."
Paris Manuscript C, c. 1490Leonardo devoted an entire section of his manuscripts — sometimes called the Libro di luce e ombra (Book of Light and Shadow) — to the systematic classification of how light behaves. He identified primary shadows (the dark side of an object facing away from light) and derived shadows (cast shadows thrown onto other surfaces), and analyzed how both vary in intensity, edge sharpness, and color.
The Sfumato Revolution
"Do not surround your bodies with lines… for the boundaries of bodies are the least things visible."
Treatise on PaintingSfumato (from Italian "vanished" or "smoky") is Leonardo's most celebrated technical innovation. By eliminating hard outlines and blending tones "like smoke," he replicated the way the human eye actually perceives reality: nothing in nature has a razor-sharp boundary.
This moved painting decisively away from the linear, outline-driven look of 15th-century Florentine art. On the Mona Lisa, Leonardo built up to 30 layers of translucent glaze, each as thin as 1–2 micrometers. The total paint thickness in shadow areas is under 40 micrometers — about half the thickness of a human hair. C2RMF scientists confirmed the complete absence of visible brushwork, suggesting he used his fingertips, soft cloths, and possibly feathers rather than brushes.
Key Innovations
Colored Shadows
Leonardo made a critical observation: shadows take on the hue complementary to the light source. Under a warm golden sunset, shadows appear bluish. Under cool blue skylight, shadow details warm slightly. He wrote: "the hue of a shadow will be the compound of the colors of the lights around it." This was not scientifically confirmed until Impressionist painters and 19th-century color theory.
Reflected Light
He was among the first to systematically paint colored reflected light in shadows. A red cloth casts a red glow on nearby surfaces. A green wall tints adjacent shadows green. He wrote: "The surface of any opaque body is affected by the colour of surrounding objects… and this effect is stronger as those objects are nearer and brighter."
Multiple Light Sources
Leonardo analyzed how two lights produce two shadows, how their penumbras overlap, and how the resulting shadow colors mix. While he rarely depicted obviously multiple light sources in finished paintings, this knowledge ensured his work accounted for both sunlight and ambient skylight simultaneously.

Virgin of the Rocks (Louvre)
The quintessential example of Leonardo's chiaroscuro in a complex environment. Soft directional light enters the grotto from the front left. The angel's face shows a cool reflected light from the rock floor — a bluish tint that reveals the gentle smile even on the shadowed side. The entire atmosphere is dim and humid, achieved through limited contrast and a harmony of midtones. No previous painting had so convincingly depicted a natural lighting environment.
The Last Supper
Three arched windows behind Christ create a natural halo effect without a literal drawn halo. Leonardo aligned the painted light with the real refectory windows so the mural's lighting would seamlessly extend the room's actual illumination at certain times of day. Judas is the only apostle with a completely shadowed face — light and moral judgment fused.
Saint Jerome in the Wilderness
The unfinished state reveals Leonardo's working method: he built volume through light and shadow before adding color. Deep shadows carve out the hollows of Jerome's ribcage and eye sockets; bold highlights pick up the protruding knee. Even without color or fine detail, the power of chiaroscuro alone conveys spiritual agony. This painting shows that for Leonardo, light was the first and fundamental layer of painting.
